What is i-choice ?
i-choice is
a new service by CYTA that,
using DSL as the underlying
technology, enables the
subscriber to connect to
the broadband network of
CYTA. At that point, the
subscriber may choose an
Internet Service Provider
of his choice and subsequently
enter the Internet. i-choice is
installed over and above
an existing telephone line
and offers connection speeds
up to 20 times faster than
the ISDN 64kbps.
Which technology support i-choice?
On DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) Technology
What is DSL?
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) provides high-speed digital connectivity and enables Service Providers to deliver high-speed services such as Video, Audio and Internet directly to the consumer utilising the existing copper lines. Customers will still be able to use their existing telephones whilst enjoying the higher speed digital connectivity.
The circuits are described as asymmetric because most of the bandwidth is used to offer fast 'downstream' speeds to the end-user whilst the remainder is used for 'upstream' data back to the Service Provider.
When will it be available?
i-choice is available now
In what areas is it available?
At this stage the i-choice service is available in the most urban and semi-urban areas, as well as, some rural areas.
Will it be possible for everybody to get this service?
There are two factors that determine whether i-choice can be made available on your line:
- The local exchange (i.e. where your telephone line is connected) has been set up to support DSL. You can check this by clicking on the menu command “Area Availability”.
- The distance of line between your home and the local telephone exchange should be less than 4 km and the quality of the line adequate.
How does ADSL compare with access through ISDN and PSTN?
ISDN and PSTN involve not only fixed rental, but also usage charges for the telephone line. ISDN is also limited to a maximum speed of 128kbits and PSTN to 56kbps. At the speed of 128kbps for ISDN, one is utilising both ISDN channels and paying for two telephone calls. However, if one needs to be permanently connected, wants greater speed and also a fixed cost independent of usage, then i-choice, or fixed leased lines should be considered.
What do I pay for i-choice?
A fixed monthly fee that includes the monthly rental
for the telephone line. Telephone calls are charged
extra. There are no timed call charges when i-choice is
used for accessing the internet.
Does i-choice enable me to simultaneously surf on the internet and talk on the phone?
Yes. A Splitter separates the telephone signal from the data signal and allows both services to be used simultaneously.
Does my telephone number change when my line is upgraded to i-choice?
No. The telephone number stays the same.
Is there a difference in the access speed to the broadband network between PSDN or ISDN line?
No. The speed is the same in both cases.
Is i-choice Internet?
Íï. i-choice is the infrastructure that enables access to the internet through an ÉSP at the high speed without per minute charge.
How does i-choice affect my telephone line?
i-choice is installed over and above an existing PSTN or ISDN telephone line. i-choice does not affect the operation of the telephone service provided that appropriate splitters/filters have been installed at the customer premises.
